Lagunitas Undercover Investigation Shut-down Ale

I haven't had the opportunity to try this beer in a couple years, so thanks to the SD Booze Reviews crew for sending me home with this beer. Classified as a "double IPA" and/or "strong ale" by BeerAdvocate and Lagunitas, the aroma really gives off the impression of a barleywine... a big west coast barleywine with lots of hops. There's a sugary, slightly oxidized malt sweetness in there along with some greenery. The taste is sweet, candied almost, with a stiff hop flavor and bitterness. Interesting beer, not sure I like it as much as I loved it the first time I had it, but it's still tasty.

Who's the dumb-dumb who's cellaring IIPAs for years? You didn't really expect this to be good did you?

Not sure if you know this mr. anonymous but this beer was re-released by Lagunitas, so it's new. I don't cellar DIPA's, I like hops.

The "12th anniversary" under investigation shutdown ale only came in 22oz bottle format.

Please see Lagunitas' website for verification if you don't believe me.

Oh btw- a new milestone reached here at Summer of Beer- my first TROLL!

Thank you for your two comments in the last couple days though anonymous which contributed absolutely nothing of any substance.

You have truly arrived SOB. First, "Dr. Sage" and now a troll!

If the beer is not old then it's even more reprehensible that you are experiencing oxidized flavors in the beer. Shame on Lagunitas, but also a shame on you for bashing commentary on a public blog. I take it that you are the type of blogger that only accepts congratulatory virtual hand jobs from clueless minions.

The word sweet appears twice too many times for a good IIPA. That equals FAIL

Well I don't have any minions, though maybe in the afterlife I will.

But please tell me how saying "Festbier rocks you twonk." adds anything constructive? Had you said "I really like the Weihenstephaner Festbier, and I get this flavor, or that flavor out of it that is really good, and maybe you should give it another try etc etc" I would have totally been down for conversation on that.

Also, maybe you should research or know your beers a little bit better before you speak negatively towards the person writing about them (ie thinking Undercover is 2 or 3 years old) and I'll be more receptive to your comments.

As for the label of Undercover Shut-down as being "sweet"... it is a sweet beer, I would never classify it myself as a double IPA... it's more of a barleywine to me which is pretty good. It was classified on BA as a DIPA. Lagunitas calls it a Strong Ale.

Any blog that starts with the verbiage "Who's the dumb-dumb who's cellaring IIPAs for years?" does not lend itself to constructive or collaborative converstion. If someone does not add value to your blog, whether in agreement or disagreement, then I say bash away.
